The sacred lake
Pushkar Lake is one of the holiest lakes in Hinduism. Legend says it formed where a lotus petal dropped by Lord Brahma touched the earth. Pilgrims believe a dip in its waters, especially on Kartik Purnima, washes away sins.
The lake is surrounded by numerous ghats (stepped bathing platforms) and is closely linked to the nearby Brahma Temple.
Famous ghats
A few ghats you will hear about:
- Brahma Ghat: closely associated with Lord Brahma
- Varaha Ghat: linked to the Varaha avatar of Vishnu, popular for the evening aarti
- Gau Ghat (Gandhi Ghat): where some of Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes were immersed in 1948
The evening aarti
Every evening at sunset, priests perform aarti on the ghats with lamps, bells and chanting. Find a quiet spot on the steps a little early to watch respectfully.
Visiting etiquette
The ghats are a place of worship, so please:
- Remove your shoes before stepping onto the ghats
- Dress modestly and avoid public displays of affection
- Ask before photographing people, and never photograph bathing pilgrims
- Politely decline unsolicited “puja” offers if you do not wish to take part
- Remember that Pushkar is a vegetarian, alcohol-free holy town
From the lake to the dunes
After a peaceful morning by the water, enjoy a different side of Pushkar on a desert safari and a night in the desert.
