Morning: the Dargah and the old city

Start early at Ajmer Sharif Dargah, before the crowds build. Afterwards walk to Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra and explore the lanes around the shrine, full of rose petals, chadar sellers, attar (perfume) shops and sweet stalls.

Late morning: Akbar’s Palace and Soniji ki Nasiyan

Visit the Government Museum in Akbar’s Palace, then the gilded Swarna Nagari hall at Soniji ki Nasiyan Jain temple.

Afternoon: lakes and views

Relax at Ana Sagar Lake and Daulat Bagh, take a boat ride if available, or head up to Taragarh Fort or Prithviraj Smarak for views over the city.

Evening: qawwali or the desert

Stay for the soulful qawwali sessions at the Dargah, which are especially popular on Thursday evenings, or drive over the hill to Pushkar for a sunset camel safari, a folk dance and fire show and a night at our desert camp.

What to eat in Ajmer

Do not leave without trying:

  • Sohan halwa: Ajmer’s famous dense, nutty sweet
  • Kadhi kachori and other Rajasthani breakfast snacks
  • Biryani and kebabs in the Dargah Bazaar area
  • Rabri and kulfi to cool down in the afternoon
